Description
No. 9 Newbiggin is a house, possibly converted from an outbuilding, likely dating from the late 18th century. It is constructed of roughly-coursed rubble with brick projections and features a stone-flagged roof with a brick chimney stack. The building has 2½ storeys and two bays, with the right bay mostly obscured by a short projection that connects No. 9 to the left return of No. 11 at a right angle.
The left bay contains a half-glazed door with a panelled base and matching sidelights, featuring a total of six panes above and six panes below, all under a timber lintel. The first floor has a 20-pane sash window in a wooden box frame, also under an old timber lintel. The second floor features a shorter 15-pane sash window in a raking half dormer, with both windows having horizontally-reeded stone cills. The right bay is mostly blank, except for a blocked doorway that leads up a flight of stone steps, which are cut off at the bottom, featuring a timber lintel and stone cill. There is also a small fixed light in the projection. The roof is low-pitched with an old brick chimney at the left end. The building has been recently renovated and is included in the register for its group value only.
