Description

A row of four houses, now houses and guesthouses, dating from the 1830s and 1840s. The houses are constructed of brick in Flemish bond, with painted stone dressings and slate roofs. The buildings are three storeys high, with an additional attic and basement level. Each house originally had two bays, although No.45 projects slightly and Nos. 47-51 share a continuous sill band at the first floor level. The windows are glazing bar sashes, with rusticated lintels that have false keystones; the lintels for No.45 are made of unpainted stone. No.51 features a wide canted bay window at ground floor and basement level with sashes that lack glazing bars, and a decorative cornice. Each house also has an attic dormer. The doorways are positioned in the right-hand bay of each house, except for No.45, which has a doorway in the left-hand bay. The doorcases feature engaged, fluted Doric columns and panelled reveals, and the doors themselves have six panels, each with an overlight. The overlights for Nos. 45 and 47 are glazed with margin panes. Ridge chimneys are situated between the houses. The interior was not inspected. The garden front walls are of brick with stone and concrete copings. Nos. 45 and 51 have cast-iron gates with turned gateposts that are topped with ball finials. No.47 has similar gate piers, but no gate. To the left of the gate at No.45, the wall curves and has railings. The front and left-hand side walls of No.51 also have railings with cast-iron spear finials.
