Description

Lilac Cottage is a house, likely dating to the 17th century or earlier, with 19th-century additions and 20th-century alterations. The house is constructed of timber framing and random ironstone rubble, with a kitchen extension of squared ironstone rubble and brick dressings. A brick lean-to is present, along with gables and stacks. The roof is covered in concrete tiles, with clay pantiles to the extensions. The house has an end-stack entry plan, originally comprising two and a half bays of timber frame, possibly larger in its original form. It has two storeys and two first-floor windows. A plank door is situated on the right-hand side, set beneath a segmental brick arch. A large 20th-century bay window and a casement, beneath a wooden lintel, are located to the left. Casements are also present on the first floor. A vertical strip of brick infill in the rubble wall indicates the former position of a wall post, and a horizontal timber is visible at ground floor level on the left. The house features a cogged brick cornice, tumbled brick gables, and end stacks. The single-storey, two-bay kitchen extension to the right includes an attic and features a plank door, a casement, and an end stack, all set within segmental arches. A lean-to on the left also incorporates a plank door and a casement. Inside, the ground floor has an ovolo-moulded ceiling beam with flat and tongue stops. The first floor reveals sections of three arch-braced tie beams, with the central portions removed.
