Description

The Smithy is a house and smithy built in the mid-19th century, with earlier origins, for the Sheffield Estate. It is constructed of red brick, with the side and rear walls of the shoeing shop made from coursed ironstone rubble, and features pantile roofs. The house has two storeys and three bays, with a lower single-bay kitchen section on the left and a longer lower section on the right that contains the forge and shoeing shop.

The house has a central plank door, with two 12-pane sliding sash windows to the left and one to the right, along with similar windows above, all featuring stone cills. The forge on the right has a plank stable door and a large workshop casement window with vertical glazing bars. The former shoeing shop has double plank doors, and all ground floor openings are topped with segmental brick arches. There are two attic sliding sash windows on the left gable and a plank door to the attic of the shoeing shop in the right gable.

Inside the shoeing shop, there is a reused 15th-century moulded ceiling beam, while other beams in the house are more recent insertions. The forge is complete and still in use. This building is a fine example of an unaltered purpose-built village forge and smith's house.
