Description
The Visitors' Centre and Workshops, located in the stable yard approximately 150 metres north-west of Normanby Hall, is a single-storey building originally constructed as stables and a carriage house in 1820 by Sir Robert Smirke for Sir Robert Sheffield. The structure features a brick front with coursed ironstone rubble on the sides and rear, accented by brick dressings and later rendering, topped with a slate roof. Designed in the Classical Revival style, it has a rectangular plan and consists of seven symmetrical bays.
The central bay, which has a pediment, projects forward, while the end bays are recessed. The building includes a plinth, a late buttress at the left corner, and a band at the impost level. Bays 3, 4, and 5 contain segmental arched carriage openings with pairs of plank doors topped by fanlights with glazing bars. Bay 2 features a similar opening with a single-pane window beneath its fanlight. Bay 6 has a round-headed recess with a casement, while bay 1 has a plank door under a low segmental arch with a recessed rectangular panel above. Bay 7 features double doors beneath a similar panel. The right return facing the park showcases a gabled pedimented central section that also breaks forward, with a band interrupted at the impost level by a round-headed recess containing a casement. All casements throughout the building are fitted with glazing bars.
