Description
The Carriage House and Flats Numbers 1 and 2 in the stable yard, located 150 metres northwest of Normanby Hall, were built in 1820 by Sir Robert Smirke for Sir Robert Sheffield. This structure features a brick front and stacks, with the sides and rear made of coursed ironstone rubble and brick dressings, and later rendering. The roof is slate, and the building is designed in the Classical Revival style.
It has a rectangular plan and forms the north side of the stable yard, consisting of one and two stories across seven bays in a symmetrical arrangement. The central section is two stories high and five bays wide, flanked by single-story end bays. The second, fourth, and sixth bays project forward. A plinth and two bands connect the bays, with the lower band interrupted by openings. The central bay features a pediment and contains a recessed rectangular carriage entrance flanked by lamps on brackets, with double doors and a rectangular overlight that includes glazing bars.
The flanking bays each have two carriage entrances with plank doors. Bays two and six also have plank doors and casements set in segmental-arched recesses, with a round-headed recess above, situated between the bands. The end bays feature a large casement in a segmental-headed recess with a rectangular recess above. On the first floor, there is a central circular window with radiating glazing bars, flanked by two casements with stone sills under low segmental arches. All casements are fitted with glazing bars. The building has hipped roofs and end stacks on the central block.
