Description

The house is a farmhouse, likely dating back to the 17th century or earlier, with later additions and alterations from the 18th, 19th, and late 19th centuries. It is built of roughly squared ironstone rubble, colourwashed to the front, with brick dressings to a later 19th-century outshut and stucco dressings to a wing. Ironstone and brick stacks are visible, and the roofs are covered in pantiles (on the main range and outshuts) and plain tiles (on the wing).

The farmhouse is arranged in an L-shape, comprising a four-cell main range with front and rear outshuts, and a two-bay rear wing with a garden entrance. The front facing Darby Road has a single-story section with an attic to the right, featuring an entrance on the left and a two-story, two-window section to the left. A part-glazed door is flanked by a three-light sliding sash with glazing bars to the right, and two nine-pane sashes are set in flush wood architraves with stone sills and segmental brick arches to the left. Above are two similar nine-pane sashes. A catslide roof slopes to the right, with a roof-light above the entrance. Brick coped and tumbled gables are present. Two axial brick stacks stand to the right, and a large projecting stack rises from the left gable, featuring a stone breast, offsets, and a brick chimney.

The garden front presents the main range to the right, with a two-story, two-and-a-half bay outshut and a projecting wing to the left, containing the garden entrance. The rear wing has rusticated stucco quoins and stone steps leading to an early 19th-century Doric doorcase with fluted pilasters supporting an entablature and cornice. Carved wreath decoration adorns the spandrels of the door arch. A panelled door sits beneath a radial fanlight, set within panelled reveals and soffit. Twelve and sixteen-pane sashes are set in rusticated stucco surrounds. A cogged brick eaves cornice runs along the top, and the roof is hipped. The main range to the right has sixteen-pane and unequal sashes in flush wood architraves, set beneath stucco flat arches, and an early 19th-century French window in a rusticated stucco surround.

A wall to the right (east) of the main range includes a plank door above which is a painted stone sundial bearing the inscription "La Vie passe comme une ombre 1820 I. Waterland fecit.”

Inside, several original features remain, including moulded ceiling cornices, panelled doors, window shutters, and architraves.
