TA 10 SE IRBY UPON HUMBER

5/35 Dovecote at Irby Dales Farm approximately 150 metres west of Irby Dales Farmhouse

Dovecote and horse-gin. 1855 on datestone. Brick, whitewashed. Welsh slate roof. Octagonal on plan: forms centrepiece of south side of crew yard. 2 storeys. Each face has round-arched recessed panels to both floors, separated by 2-course brick band. Recessed round-headed plank door to south with strap hinges, flanked by segmental-headed cast-iron windows with 6-panes above ventilation grilles. First floor: inscribed datestone above door, panel to left with 2 rows of 3 dove-holes. Stepped eaves. Hipped octagonal roof. Interior. Ground floor formerly contained a horse engine to pump water into a tank above that supplied the farmyard. Dove nesting holes occupy remainder of first floor.
