Description
The monument to Captain John Gravill is located in the General Cemetery and was erected in 1865 through public subscription. It commemorates Captain John Gravill, who died aboard the Steam Whaler 'Diana' when it became frozen in the ice of the Davis Straits. The tomb is made of white marble and features an enclosed grave surrounded by low marble walls. At the head of the grave stands a square monument with a stepped and moulded base. The main front of the monument has a long inscription, topped by a moulded cap that includes an oval carved relief depicting his ship stuck in the ice. Above this, the tomb is crowned with a partially draped urn. This monument is a rare example dedicated specifically to a captain of the whaling industry, which was once a significant part of Hull's industrial development.
