Description
The pair of K8 telephone kiosks are located at the junction of Princes Avenue and Park Grove in Hull. Designed by Bruce Martin, they were introduced in 1968.
The kiosks stand back-to-back, with their doors facing outward in opposing directions. One is a Mark 1 kiosk, and the other is a Mark 2 kiosk. They are situated on a wide, tree-lined boulevard, Princes Avenue, which opened in 1875, opposite the Grade II listed Methodist Church Tower.
The Mark 1 kiosk has a square plan, standing on a concrete base. It is constructed from six cast iron parts and an aluminium door. Three sides feature large sheets of toughened glass set in rectangular frames with rounded corners, while the rear panel has a blind rectangular frame with rounded corners. Below this is a cast iron plaque bearing the name CARRON COMPANY in relief lettering. The flat roof dome features four rectangular framed signage panes with rounded corners, each glazed with toughened glass and bearing the word TELEPHONE on a white background. The kiosk is painted cream.
The Mark 2 kiosk is also cream-painted and features a CARRON COMPANY plaque, being similar to the Mark 1 with the exception of the roof dome. The four sides of its flat roof dome have rectangular framed signage panes with rounded corners, which have thickened lower edges with concave curves joining the frames at the outer corners of the roof dome.
