Description
The Methodist Church Tower, built in 1905 and altered in 1995, is located on Princes Avenue in Kingston upon Hull. Designed by Sir Alfred Gelder, this tower is constructed of red brick with ashlar dressings and showcases a Free Gothic Revival style.
The tower features a battered southwest section with two stages, diagonal buttresses, and a central buttress on each side, all adorned with brick and stone banding on the second stage. The diagonal buttresses are topped with octagonal pinnacles that have four niches and domed tops, while the intermediate buttresses have short square pinnacles with flat tops. On the south side, there are two staggered round-headed windows on the lower stage, alongside a round-headed door to the right. The bell stage has two moulded segmental arches on each side, which contain louvred double lancet openings. The octagonal spire is finished with a panelled band and a ball finial.
At the base of the tower is the southwest porch, which has a shallow coped gable and parapet. The west side features a pointed-arched doorway with a hoodmould, flanked by buttresses topped with panelled pedestals. The original church was demolished in 1995.
