Description

No. 1 Parliament Street is an auctioneers' office built around 1910. The building is constructed of brick with ashlar dressings and features gabled and hipped slate roofs, which include two ridge stacks, one gable stack, and one side wall stack, all of which are coped. It has an ashlar plinth, polychrome angle pilasters, string courses, and deep moulded wooden eaves. The structure is three storeys high and has a four-by-two window arrangement, situated on a corner site with an angled corner.

The windows are framed with stone surrounds and mullions, and they feature eared architraves. On the Parliament Street front, to the left, there is an entrance bay with shallow plain pilasters and a cross casement window on the first floor. To the left of the entrance, there is a small transomed window, and to the right, a double bay with a narrow central pilaster and two three-light cross casements. Above this bay, there is a two-light mullioned casement, flanked on the left by a single window and on the right by two three-light windows. The entrance itself has a deep hood with a segmental pediment and a splayed opening with steps leading up to it. To the left of the entrance, there is a single transomed window, and to the right, two three-light cross casements with double keystones. These windows have segmental heads and cornices.

The angled corner bay features a first-floor cross casement and above it, a two-light mullioned window. Below this, there is a segment-headed cross casement with a cornice. On the left return, facing Alfred Gelder Street, there are two windows with a polychrome central pilaster. This side also includes two three-light cross casements and, above, two three-light mullioned windows. Below these, there are two segment-headed three-light cross casements with double keystones.
