Description
No. 6 and 6A Market Place is a house that has been converted into shops. It dates from the mid-18th century and has undergone alterations in the 19th and 20th centuries. The building is finished in stucco and has a Welsh slate roof. It is two storeys high with five first-floor windows.
No. 6, on the left, features a late 19th-century shop front with a recessed door to the left and a frieze supported by a carved console. No. 6A, on the right, has a six-fielded-panel door with an overlight set in an advanced doorcase that has panelled reveals and a frieze above, which continues from No. 6 and is supported by a matching console on the right and a less elaborate one on the left. There are two plate-glass sash windows to the right. On the first floor, the plate-glass sashes are set beneath channelled wedge lintels, and there is a broad moulded timber cornice. The roof is hipped to the left, with stacks rising through the rear pitch.
Inside, there is a closed-string staircase with boxed-in balusters and square-section newels. A three-panel door leads to the first floor, and there is a dentilled cornice in the landing area. Some doors feature H-L hinges. The frieze in the main room has relief festoons and paterae, dating from the late 18th century.
