Description

Stamford Bridge Lock is a river lock built around 1720, likely based on a design from 1704. It was constructed by George Sorocold for the Commissioners of the Derwent Navigation. The lock features ashlar stonework with some coursed rubble. There is a short upstream cut leading to a large serpentine basin that narrows sharply at the downstream gate. This is followed by a long serpentine cut with stepped sides and passing places for boats. The cut passes beneath the north span of the Derwent Road Bridge before flowing into the River Derwent.
