Description
Nos 2 and 4 Pinfold Street are two houses that were originally a single dwelling, dating from the late 17th century to early 18th century, with 19th-century alterations and extensive renovations in the 20th century. The building is made of rendered brick and has a pantile roof. It likely started as a three-cell lobby-entry house but has been converted into two direct-entry homes, featuring an outshut with a catslide roof at the rear.
The structure has two storeys and three first-floor windows, with a deep rendered plinth. No 2, on the left, has a six-fielded-panel door with a divided overlight and a sash window with glazing bars to the left. No 4, on the right, features a six-panel door below a divided overlight, flanked by sash windows with glazing bars. The first floor has tall sash windows with glazing bars and stone sills. The eaves have a dentilled course, and the roof is swept with raised gable ends, complemented by an external stack on the left and a ridge stack.
Inside, all original features noted by Neave in 1979 have been removed. The panelling and staircase in No 2 are later additions, and the massive brick fireplace in No 4 has been entirely rebuilt. This building was known as the Spotted Cow Inn in the 19th century.
