Description

The war memorial stands in Howden Bridgegate and dates from 1920. Designed by Clement W Jewitt of Hornsey, London, and worked and fixed by C J Marston of Finsbury Park, it is built in an Art Nouveau Gothic style. The memorial is octagonal in plan and set upon two steps leading to a moulded base. This base features panels containing blind tracery and inscribed plaques. A moulded cornice sits above, and beyond that are round-headed niches containing figures, flanked by offset buttresses with finials. Carved spandrels and a parapet rise above the figures, topped by a tall pinnacle with blind niches holding paterae and complex hoods, culminating in a cross. The memorial is noted for its group value.
