Description

No 2 Churchside is a house built in 1876 for Miss Jane Small. It features white brick in Flemish bond with stone dressings and a stone facing on the ground floor, topped by a slate roof. Designed in the Florentine palazzo style, the building has three storeys and three bays. The ground floor is articulated by banded Corinthian pilasters and has rusticated quoins at the corners of the upper storeys.

The central entrance consists of a six-panel double-leaf door with an elliptical-arched overlight, surrounded by an architrave decorated with an acanthus motif. Above the door is an elaborate datestone in a cartouche, displaying the initials 'JS' and the date '1876'. Flanking the entrance are elliptical-arched fixed windows with dropped keystones, also featuring an egg-and-dart motif in their arches.

The frieze above the ground floor includes paterae and a cornice supported by two brackets with carved stone heads. On the first floor, there are plate-glass sash windows set within architraves, accompanied by friezes with relief shell motifs and brackets that carry cornices. The central window on this floor is topped with a pediment.

The second floor also features plate-glass sash windows in architraves, placed on a continuous sill band. The frieze here has alternating panels and brackets that support an overhanging cornice with a blocking course. The roof is finished with panelled and dentilled ridge and end stacks. This building is included for its group value.
