Description

The Market Cross in Howden is a Grade II listed structure located in the Market Place. It features a medieval base and a cross that was carved in 1909 by T S Ullathorne of Selby. The cross is made of ashlar and stands approximately 5 metres tall. It has a circular base consisting of three steps, which supports a modern square base with a square section shaft, a moulded capital, and a foliated cross. A cast-iron inscription on the base states, "This cross was erected and presented to the town of Howden by Jane, widow of Thomas Sinclair Clarke Esq of Knedlington Manor, May 27, 1909."
