Description

No 4 on Parson's Lane is a house dating from the mid-18th century, with a front that was remodeled in the 19th century. It features a rear wing that may date from the late 17th to early 18th century. The building is constructed of red brick in English bond, but the front is faced with yellow brick in Flemish bond, topped with a pantile roof.

The house has a central hallway entry and a cross wing at the rear. It stands two storeys high and has three bays. The entrance features a six-fielded-panel door with a margin-glazed overlight, set within a doorcase that has panelled reveals and cable mouldings in sunken panels, along with star motifs at the corners and a cornice. The windows are 16-pane sashes with stone sills, all beneath painted flat brick arches. There is a first-floor band, stepped eaves, gable coping, shaped kneeler, and end stacks.

Inside, the bathroom in the cross wing displays unusually massive hand-cut chamfered ceiling joists, and the roof of this section has simple A trusses that are hand-cut with cambered collars, indicating an earlier construction date for the wing. The main range features an open-string staircase with two squat column-on-vase balusters per tread. The hallway includes a keyed archway and is panelled to dado level. The roof here is an unusual variation of a queen-post design, with very tall posts supporting a collar six feet above the floor, suggesting that this area was originally used as living accommodation.
