Description

The Chestnuts is a house dating from around 1800, with alterations made in the 1930s. It is constructed of handmade brick in English bond, featuring a front facade of machine-made red brick in Flemish bond, and has stone dressings and a Westmorland slate roof. The building has a central-hallway entry and is two storeys high with five bays, including an advanced central bay. A Tuscan porch leads to a six-fielded-panel door with an overlight. The ground floor windows were altered in the 1930s to include 16-pane sashes flanked by 8-pane sashes on a continuous sill on either side of the door. On the first floor, there is an ashlar band and sashes with glazing bars designed in the original style. Flat brick arches are present throughout the building, along with a modillion eaves course and a hipped roof. The rear wall has stacks.

Inside, there is an arch with panelled reveals and imposts leading to the hall. The open-string staircase features two slender column balusters per tread, carved tread ends, and a ramped handrail with a fine inlaid star motif on the spiral newel. Another arch with panelled reveals and imposts leads to the landing, alongside a blind arch. The main bedroom contains an original fireplace with a cast-iron grate and a surround decorated with drops, festoons, and rosettes. Most rooms retain original moulded cornices.
