Description

The railway station, built around 1847 by G T Andrews for the York and North Midland Railway Company, is a notable example of Victorian architecture. Constructed from red-grey brick with stone dressings and a slate roof, it features a cast iron structure. The main elevation is two storeys high and consists of three bays, with a single bay outshut to the right and a rear wing.

The station has a plinth and a tetrastyle portico supported by Tuscan pilasters, which includes an entablature and a blocking course above the central bay. Behind the portico, there are two four-panel doors with overlights featuring glazing bars, which are set under slightly cambered gauged-brick heads. These doors are flanked by sash windows with glazing bars, also under slightly cambered gauged brick arches, located in oblong recesses with similar heads. The first floor has a moulded sill band beneath three sashes with glazing bars, all topped with slightly cambered gauged brick heads. The eaves oversail, and there are rear wall stacks.

The outshut to the right contains a sash window with glazing bars and a sill beneath a slightly cambered gauged brick arch. The left elevation features a canted bay on the ground floor that overlooks the platform, with sash windows that have glazing bars and oversailing bracketed eaves. Adjacent to this is a four-bay verandah supported by thin cylindrical cast-iron columns, leading to the rear wing. The platforms are bordered by brick revetting walls topped with stone cappings.
