Description

Nos 6 and 8 North Bar Without is a late 18th-century building that was remodeled by J E Elwell in 1890. It features two storeys and an attic, with applied half-timbering on the first floor above a brick ground floor that has stone rustication. The building has two gabled dormers and five dormers on the side elevation. At the corner, there is a polygonal tourelle that rises two storeys and has a candle-snuffer roof. The first floor includes one small window with two lights and a three-light oriel window. On the ground floor, there is a shop window and a four-light mullion and transom window. A four-panel door is located at the corner, with two glazed panels below a carved oak overdoor panel signed by W Thorley from 1892, titled 'The Political Cheap Jack', which is believed to relate to Disraeli. The building also features a richly modillioned and coloured coved eaves cornice. Elwell used this building as part of his premises.
