Description
No 4 North Bar Without is a late 18th-century building that was remodeled by J E Elwell for his business in 1890. It has three overhanging storeys. The ground floor features a shop front adorned with carved mottoes, bracket figures of mythical beasts, and stained glass. The first floor boasts a seven-light bay window above a series of carved and tinctured heraldic shields. On the second floor, there are two three-light windows separated by a figure in a niche. Two larger figures flank the base of the broad gable, which is topped with an elaborate wrought iron weather vane. Inside, there is a carved staircase designed by Elwell. This building is part of a group with Nos 6 and 8.
