Description
The Church of Saint Edmund is a Grade II listed building located in Seaton Ross, built in 1788 and restored between 1901 and 1908 by Temple Moore. It is constructed of orange brick in Flemish bond with stone dressings and has a plain tile roof. The church features a two-stage west tower, a four-bay nave, and a single-bay chancel.
The west tower includes a small round-headed window on the ground floor and paired similar openings in the belfry, all set under gauged brick arches. Above the belfry openings is a datestone. The tower has a stepped brick eaves cornice and a pyramidal roof topped with a windvane. The nave contains three shortened round-headed cross-mullion windows with leaded glazing, also under gauged brick arches. The original stone sills have been replaced with a brick apron inserted during the 1901-1908 restoration. A double leaf boarded door is located under a round gauged brick arch, with a sundial above it inscribed:
Disce dies numerare tuos 1825 William Watson delin
The nave features a dentilled brick eaves cornice and plain close verges. The chancel has a three-light mullioned window with leaded glazing under a segmental arch and a plain Venetian east window. It also includes a dentilled eaves cornice, shaped kneelers to the coped gable, and a cross finial.
Inside, there is an 18th-century pulpit with raised and fielded panelling beneath a sounding board with a cornice. The altar rails are also from the 18th century, featuring a centre gate, turned balusters, and a heavy moulded handrail with knob finials. Additionally, there is a plain 12th-century tub font located in the tower chamber.
