Description
This late Georgian cast iron lamp standard, dating from after 1826, is located in the grass verge next to No 41 North Bar Without in Beverley. It is believed to have been made by William Crosskill of Beverley. The lamp standard features a square stepped base with a stilted arch on each face of the lower step, and an eagle's head on each face of the upper step. The column is octagonal and designed in the form of a fasces-minus-axehead, which symbolizes a disused weapon of war. Above a narrow collar, the column rises to a section modeled after Pompeiian bronze standard lamps, topped with a modern copper gas-type lantern.
