Description
This is a late Georgian cast iron lamp standard, dating from after 1826, located in the grass verge next to No 9 New Walk in Beverley. It is believed to have been made by William Crosskill of Beverley. The lamp standard features a square, stepped base with a stilted arch on each face of the lower step, and the word 'CROSSKILL' on each face of the upper step. The column is octagonal and designed in the style of a fasces minus axehead, symbolizing a disused weapon of war. Above a narrow collar, the column is topped with a modern copper gas-type lantern.
