Description
This is a late Georgian cast iron lamp standard, likely made by William Crosskill of Beverley after 1826. It features a square, stepped base with a stilted arch on each face of the lower step, and a wreath on each face of the upper step. The column is octagonal and designed in the form of a fasces minus axehead, symbolizing a disused weapon of war. Rising from a narrow collar is a section modeled after Pompeiian bronze standard lamps, topped with a modern copper gas-type lantern. The lamp standard is located adjacent to the Minster railings opposite No 12 on Beverley St John Street.
