Description

Knedlington House, built in the late 18th century, is a house made of colour-washed brick with stone dressings and a pantile roof. It features a stuccoed brick garden wall topped with stone coping and has cast-iron carriage gates. The house has a central hallway entry, an outhouse, and a cross wing at the rear. It stands two storeys high with three bays and a blind single-storey outhouse to the left. The building has a plinth and a six-fielded-panel door with a radial fanlight set in a Doric doorcase with attached columns. Throughout the house, there are 16-pane sash windows beneath channelled wedge lintels with fluted keystones. It also has a first-floor band and a stepped eaves course, with rebuilt end stacks. A notable feature is the fine round-headed staircase window in the cross wing.

Inside, there is an open-string staircase with column-on-vase balusters featuring square knops and a ramped handrail. The ground-floor rooms have six-fielded-panel doors, with those in the main reception rooms painted by a previous occupant, likely in the early 20th century. The left reception room includes keyed-arched alcoves with imposts, while the kitchen has a wide elliptical arch to the fireplace and stopped chamfers on the ceiling beam. The bedroom fireplace consists of two surrounds: the inner one is made of stone with a fluted keystone, and the outer one is of moulded timber with paterae at the corners.

The plain garden wall with stone coping rises to two pairs of carriage gates, which have ornamental lock rails and bottom rails, and feature swept-down tops with spearheads. The gate piers are fluted and topped with ball finials.
