Description

Knedlington Old Hall is a house dating from the early to mid-17th century. It is constructed of brick in a random bond, with ashlar dressings, and has a pantile roof. The house is square in plan, originally with two parallel ranges facing the road, and a third range set at right angles to the rear. It is three storeys high, with two gabled bays. The front features a chamfered ashlar plinth and ashlar quoins. Two five-light, chamfered mullion windows are present on the ground and first floors of each front range, with a cyma recta moulded string course immediately above these windows. The second floor has blind three-light, chamfered mullion windows, also with a chamfered string course above, set within decorative stepped and ogee-shaped gables. These gables have finials to the steps and apex, and shaped kneelers to the quoins. A sundial is located on the left-hand gable. Large ridge stacks are present on each of the front ranges, each with triple diamond-set flues. Other facades feature mullion windows and similar string courses. A Tudor-arched doorway is present on the left return, while a modern doorway is on the right return. The main reception room contains early 18th-century oak panelling with bolection moulding and a narrow, coved carved cornice. A two-tier chimney-piece features an eared fire surround with a pulvinated frieze, which carries pilasters with carved swags of foliage. The doors are three-panel, and hung on H-L hinges. A coat of arms is depicted in painted glass within a window. The original splat baluster staircase has unfortunately been removed.
