Description

Barnhill Hall is a house dating from the mid-18th century, although with earlier origins and 20th-century renovations. It is constructed of brick in an English garden wall bond, with a pantile roof. The house was originally a 3-cell direct entry plan, with a cross wing and two further outshuts to the rear. It is two storeys high and has three bays. A 20th-century six-panel door with an overlight sits between bays two and three. Three-light Yorkshire sash windows are present throughout; those on the ground floor are set beneath segmental arches, while those on the first floor are below timber lintels. The building has a dentilled eaves course and raised gable ends. A large ridge stack is visible, along with an external stack to the right. The rear facade of the cross wing features a blocked window with a brick mullion. Inside, the ground-floor rooms contain massive chamfered cross beams. The former men's room in the kitchen has hand-cut joists and a trap door. Some doors retain H-L hinges. A vestigial timber framing is visible in the stairwell to the attic. A massive central stack rises through the rebuilt roof.
