Description
The Round House is a summer house, now a residential property, dating from the late 18th century with some minor later alterations. It is constructed of brick in Flemish bond with gauged brick and stone dressings, topped by a Welsh slate roof. The building has an octagonal plan and stands two storeys high. The ground floor is partially obscured to the east by 19th and 20th-century buildings that are not of special interest.
On the north elevation, there is a 20th-century inserted casement window and an ashlar band. The first floor features a round-arched sash window with glazing bars, flanked by blind round-arched panels that include an ashlar impost band and gauged brick arches. The eaves are adorned with a modillion course, and the roof is hipped with a central octagonal chimney stack.
Inside, the first-floor room, which has been divided, retains original Adamesque decoration. This includes two round-arched windows and panelled reeded round-arched alcoves with a radial pattern in the tympana, except for the fireplace wall, which features an eared panel. The room is finished with an anthemion and urn cornice.
