Description
The signal box at North Howden Station, built in 1873 for the North Eastern Railway, Southern Division, is a type 1A structure. It features a red brick exterior with a slate roof that has overhanging eaves and finials, along with a single lateral chimney stack. The building is two stories tall, with a brick plinth and an ashlar band at the first floor. The upper floor is accentuated by projecting corner pilasters.
On the west front, there is a single round-headed window with glazing bars situated above a large sliding sash window. The north front includes two round-headed windows with glazing bars above three sliding sashes, the one on the right being taller, all featuring glazing bar sashes. The east front has a plank door and a half-glazed door above, which is accessed by an external flight of wooden steps, along with a sliding sash window that also has glazing bars. The signal box is included for its group value.
