Description

Bridgegate House is a house from the mid-18th century that was refronted and extended in the late 19th century, with renovations in the 20th century. It is constructed of brick in Flemish bond and has a pantile roof. The house features a hallway entry with an extension to the left and a parallel range at the rear. It stands two storeys tall and has seven bays, including an additional bay on the left. The fourth bay has a six-panel door beneath an overlight with margin lights. The windows are sash style with glazing bars and stone sills, all set beneath wedge lintels. There is a two-course band at the first floor, a rebuilt parapet with moulded stone coping, and raised gable ends with end and ridge stacks. A notable feature is a fine lead rainwater head with a relief lion's head on the rear facade.

Inside, there is a cantilevered open-string staircase with two column-on-vase balusters per tread and a ramped handrail. The sitting room is fully panelled, featuring a dado rail and eared panels, with a cupboard in an eared surround flanked by fluted pilasters that support a segmental pediment. The dining room includes a deep alcove with a round arch supported by pilasters with drops, and an ornate fireplace decorated with drops and urns. A photograph owned by the current owners, taken before 1877, shows the house with dormer windows and without a parapet or extension. The configuration of the windows appears slightly different, and evidence in the bonding of the right gable end suggests that the refronting and the building of the parapet occurred in the late 19th century.
