Description

Nos 45 and 47 Hailgate are Methodist Ministers' houses, now private homes, built in 1837 according to the deeds. The houses are constructed of grey brick in Flemish bond and feature a Welsh slate roof. They are two storeys tall with a central section that has five bays, flanked by lower two-storey, single-bay wings. The central section has Ionic doorcases at bays 2 and 4; the left door has a glazed entrance beneath an overlight, while the right door features a half-glazed entrance beneath an overlight with original decorative glazing bars. The windows are sashes with glazing bars and sills, set beneath cambered, channelled wedge lintels that have reeded keystones in the central section. The side wings have low ground-floor window openings, with the left opening blocked and the right featuring a 6-pane fixed window. On the first floor, there are round-arched windows with channelled arches and reeded keystones; the left window contains a round-headed sash with glazing bars, while the right is blocked. The houses have a timber cornice with paired brackets, gable coping, round kneelers, and end and ridge stacks on the central section, with hipped roofs on the side wings.

The interior of No 45 includes an open-string staircase with column-on-vase balusters and carved tread ends, as well as a round-headed staircase window and several cast-iron basket fireplaces. The interior of No 47 has not been inspected but is said to be very similar.
