Description
No. 7 Bridgegate is a house dating from the late 18th century, with alterations made in the 19th and 20th centuries. It is constructed of brick in English garden wall bond and features a French tile roof. The building has a central hallway entry and two parallel ranges, standing two storeys high with three bays. The entrance includes a six-fielded-panel door with an overlight, set in a reeded doorcase that has pendants below the frieze and to the cornice. This is flanked by canted bay windows added in 1935. On the first floor, there are 16-pane sash windows beneath wedge lintels. The gable has coping and plain kneelers, with a left end stack and a large external stack on the right end, which has been largely rebuilt. The entire right gable end has also been substantially rebuilt. A 19th-century map indicates there was a third room at the right end. An outshut to the right gable end is not of special interest. Inside, there is an open-string staircase with two column-on-vase balusters per tread and a ramped handrail. The house features six-fielded-panel doors, some with original H-L hinges, and a chamfered cross beam in the kitchen. This building is included for its group value.
