Description
This late 18th-century house, now divided into two dwellings at 48 and 48A Hailgate, was altered in the 1860s for the solicitor George England. The house is constructed of brick in an English garden wall bond pattern, with a Welsh slate roof. It is two storeys high and originally comprised three bays, with the central bay slightly projecting. A four-panel door with a radial fanlight is set within a pilastered doorcase topped by an open pediment on consoles. To the left, a tripartite sash window with glazing bars sits above a modern board door with overlight. A less sympathetic PVC window occupies the original opening to the right. The first floor has similarly replacement PVC windows in the original openings. The windows are topped by painted brick flat arches. The house has a decorative eaves course, shaped kneelers on the gables, and a central ridge stack. Inside, an open-string staircase features slender turned balusters. Original six-panel doors and a dado rail remain.
