Description
Wetwang House is a farmhouse dating from the early 19th century, with an earlier range at the rear and later additions and alterations. The front is constructed of reddish-brown brick in Flemish bond, while the rest is in English garden wall bond, featuring ashlar dressings and a stone slate roof, with pantiles on the rear range. The building has a central hallway plan and stands two storeys high with three bays, the centre bay projecting forward and topped with a pediment.
There are two steps leading to the central entrance, which consists of a six-fielded-panel door with a fanlight that has decorative glazing bars, all set within a recessed semicircular-headed surround and under a Doric porch that includes a frieze and cornice. The windows are two-pane sashes with ashlar sills and channelled lintels; the window above the entrance is set in an elliptically arched surround. The eaves are adorned with a modillion cornice and there are ashlar copings and end stacks.
Inside, the house features a cantilevered staircase with rod-on-vase balusters and a wreathed handrail. The hall includes a Neoclassical cornice and an archway with decorative pilasters, along with some six-fielded-panel doors.
