Description

Monument Cottage is a house built around 1866, likely designed by J Gibbs of Oxford for Sir Tatton Sykes, 5th Baronet. It is constructed of gault brick in English garden wall bond, with ashlar and red brick dressings, and has a Welsh slate roof. The building has an L-shaped plan and is a single-storey structure with single-bay ranges that include attics in the gables.

The cottage features a chamfered plinth and an entrance located at the angle, which consists of a plank door set within a porch supported by piers with foliate capitals. Above the porch is an oculus, and to the right, there is a bay window with three 2-pane sash windows, topped by a red brick band. The gable end has ashlar copings supported by responds with foliate capitals.

On the left side, there is a gabled range with two narrow 2-pane sash windows on the ground floor, featuring quoined ashlar jambs, ashlar sills, and lintels. A red brick band runs above this level. The gable displays a decorative shield and has two trefoil-headed windows set in quoined ashlar surrounds beneath a pointed arch of red brick. The first floor gables are capped with ashlar copings supported by similar responds. The rear of the cottage has stacks and decorative ridge tiles. It was originally built as a caretaker's cottage for the Sir Tatton Sykes Memorial.
