Description
The Church of St Helen is a Grade II listed building located in Barmby-on-the-Marsh, dating back to around 1600 for the nave, with an 18th-century tower and a 19th-century chancel. The church is constructed of limestone rubble and dressed stone, featuring a Welsh slate roof over the nave, a brick tower topped with a copper roof, and a dressed limestone chancel with a plain tile roof.
The structure includes a west tower and a five-bay nave with porches on both the south and north sides, as well as a two-bay chancel. The tower is notable for its fine three-stage design, which is highlighted by bands. It has a board door on the south side, a fixed window on the west, and slatted belfry openings on each face, all set back under segmental arches. The eaves are dentilled, and the roof is domed with an ogee shape.
On the north side of the nave, there is an 18th-century gabled porch with a keyed round-headed doorway. The nave features two-light and three-light square-headed trefoiled cusped windows, most of which have been restored. The south side mirrors the north, but the porch doorway includes imposts and a keystone. The chancel has trefoiled lancets on both the north and south sides, with a pointed east window consisting of three lights in a geometric style, complemented by angle buttresses and a stone-coped gable.
