Description

This building is a terrace of six shops located at 1-11 Cross Street and 128 Chester Street in Birkenhead, dating from around 1847. It is probably designed by Walter Scott and features an ashlar façade with Welsh slate roofs. The structure has three storeys and an attic, with a total of eighteen windows arranged in a pattern of 4-5-7-2. The five-window section is accentuated with angle quoins and has a taller attic storey that includes an interlace frieze and a modillion eaves cornice. The end block on the right creates a curved angle with Chester Street and features taller first-floor windows with tripartite sashes that have enriched stone tympana, a modillion eaves cornice, and a higher attic storey.

The shop fronts on the ground floor are mostly from the early 20th century, although the shallow canted bay windows with doors on either side in Nos. 3 and 5 may be older. There is a central segmentally-arched entrance leading to the rear. The first-floor windows are all adorned with entablatures supported by brackets, while the second-floor windows are framed in stressed architraves. All windows are twelve-pane sashes. Above, there is a moulded cornice followed by the attic storey, which contains six-pane sash windows.

This terrace is part of a continuous development that includes Nos. 90-126 Chester Street, which was built by Scott as part of the Market Cross development, serving as a shopping centre.
