Description
This is a terrace of eight houses located on Cross Street, and also incorporating numbers 20 Bolton Road and 1 Bath Street. Built in 1896 by Grayson and Ould as part of the Port Sunlight village, the terrace is constructed of red and yellow brick with stone and terracotta dressings, and has a hipped tile roof.
The terrace is one storey in height with an attic, spanning ten bays. The end bays are set back one bay, while the second and ninth bays project forward, each featuring a gable. A weathered stone base is present, along with a terracotta cornice to the ground floor. The first floor features terracotta diapering and panelling, while the gables have decorative pinnacles, coping, and finials.
The ground floor windows have chamfered stone lintels and two-light leaded casements. The central bays of the first floor have terracotta half dormers with cross-mullioned windows, crocketed gables, finials, traceried parapets and red brick aprons. The projecting gabled bays have five-light double-chamfered mullioned windows with transoms, centred blind lights with flanking pinnacles, friezes, and cornices, all with leaded glazing. The entrances feature stone surrounds, plank doors with leaded lights, and some have flanking windows. Four cross-axial stacks serve as chimneys. The side returns are similarly designed, incorporating dormers. Number 20 Bolton Road was visited by King George V and Queen Mary in 1914.
