Description

This is a terrace of seven shops built around 1850 as a single development on Argyle Street in Birkenhead. The building is constructed of brick with a Welsh slate roof. It is three storeys high and has a twelve-window front. The corners feature stone quoins, and the detailing is in stone. The shop fronts date to the late 19th century and have been altered, but retain their fascia supported by heavy console brackets. The upper windows are 12-pane sashes with flat-arched, gauged brick heads, some of which have been renewed. Stone sill bands and a moulded eaves cornice are present. The building has axial stacks. The return elevation to Lorn Street is five bays and includes four blocked round arched windows, one of which was formerly a doorway. The angle where Argyle Street meets the Lorn Street property is curved and slightly recessed. Renewed ridge stacks replace the originals.
