Description
No. 54 Shellfield Road is a house, likely built in the mid to late 18th century, that has been restored and significantly extended at the rear in the late 20th century. The exterior features white painted render on brick and a renewed thatched roof, with wheat straw on the front and reed on the rear.
The building has an unusual plan consisting of two unequal single-depth units, with a shallow outshut at the front and a small extension on the left side. It is a single-storey structure, with a very small window at each end of the outshut and a small one-light window to the right. There is a low one-window extension to the left and a gable chimney on the right. The entrance is located at the rear, which now includes a long rear wing built in a similar style and using similar materials.
Inside, the southern unit is larger than the northern unit, featuring an enlarged opening in the partition wall, and both parts are open to the roof, which has a pair of purlins that are likely made from a split mast. This house is part of a group of similar houses on Shellfield Road.
