Description

A pair of houses, built around 1826-30, forming part of a terraced row in Crosby. The houses are constructed with painted roughcast render, with painted rusticated quoining on the right and left sides, and have a slate roof with pebble-dashed chimneys that are coupled with those of the neighbouring houses. They are built to a double-depth plan, with each house having a single front and with halls adjoining, and include rear extensions. Originally symmetrical, the pair has two storeys and two plus two windows. A large, continuous verandah runs along the front, featuring pairs of attractive cast-iron open-work standards and a lead-clad roof that is hipped on both the right and left sides. At ground floor, a tall, square-headed doorway, shared between the two houses, has a panelled door, plain overlight, and a large canted bay window with four-pane sashed glazing. On the first floor, No.25 has two four-pane sashes with shouldered architraves, while No.24 now has one window with altered glazing in a similar architrave and a 20th-century canted oriel window to the right. The interior has not been inspected. The pair of houses are situated next to Nos. 22 and 23 on the right and Nos. 26 and 27 on the left. Together with the listed buildings in Marine Crescent, Adelaide Terrace, Bath Street, Beach Lawn and Marine Terrace, they form a group within the Waterloo Conservation Area of Crosby.
