Description

A pair of houses, built around 1826-30, forming part of a terraced row in Crosby. The houses have been altered since their original construction. They are rendered, with number 22 painted red on the ground floor and pebble-dashed white above, and number 23 painted white on the ground floor and pebble-dashed white above. They have rusticated quoining to the right of number 22 and the left of number 23. The roofs are slate-covered, with a brick chimney to number 22 and a panelled roughcast chimney to number 23, positioned to the left of each house, with the latter shared with number 24. The houses follow a double-depth plan, with a single room to the front of each. They are two storeys high and have two plus two windows each. A simple verandah, with three plus three bays and slim cast-iron columns, extends across the front. The verandah roofs are hipped, with the roof to the right (number 22) swept and lead-clad and the roof to the left (number 23) felted. At ground floor, each house has a tall, square-headed doorway to the right, above which is a plain overlight, and a large, canted bay window; the bay window at number 22 has sashed windows without glazing bars, while the one at number 23 has four panes. At first floor, each house has two four-pane sashes with shouldered architraves. The interiors were not inspected. Numbers 22 and 23 adjoin number 21 to the right and numbers 24 and 25 to the left. The listed buildings in Marine Crescent, together with those in Adelaide Terrace, Bath Street, Beach Lawn and Marine Terrace, form a group within the Waterloo Conservation Area of Crosby, demonstrating group value.
