Description
This is a row of three houses located at 14, 16, and 18 Botanic Road in Southport, likely built in the early 19th century. The buildings were constructed in two phases, with Nos 16 and 18 being altered to shops in the 19th century. They are made of brown hand-made brick in English garden wall bond and feature a slate roof.
The houses are two storeys tall and have a four-window range, with a vertical joint between Nos 14 and 16. No. 14 has a square-headed doorway that is off-set to the left, featuring a four-pane overlight and a wedge lintel. The ground floor has two unhorned 8/8 sash windows, each with similar lintels, while the first floor has shorter 4/8 sashes.
Nos 16 and 18, located to the left, have shop windows and doorways framed by a 19th-century wooden pilastered surround with a frieze and cornice. No. 16 features a window with eight large panes arranged in two tiers with thin glazing bars, while No. 18 has an oblong plate-glass window. Each of these shops has one 4/8 sash window on the first floor. The buildings have a ridge chimney and gable chimneys.
The row forms a group with No. 12 to the right, as well as with No. 9, Nos 11 and 13, and Nos 17-23 opposite.
