Description

The Bold Arms Hotel, now functioning as a public house, is likely from the 18th century and has been enlarged and altered over time. It features white painted render and slate roofs across four levels, with an irregular linear plan formed by a double-depth main range and additions at both ends and the rear.

The exterior consists of two storeys at varying heights, along with a small single-storey extension to the right. The main range has four windows and includes a set-back three-window wing to the left and a set-back two-plus-two-window wing to the right. The main range is distinguished by a plinth and a moulded gutter cornice, featuring doorways at the left end and between the third and fourth windows. Both doorways are adorned with fluted wooden pilasters and flat canopies supported by metal ties. To the right of each doorway is a large canted bay window with 6/6 sash windows; the ground floor has two 6/6 sashes between the doorways, while the upper floor has four 6/6 sashes, all with moulded architraves.

The left wing is longer and lower, showcasing two French windows and a tripartite window at ground level, with three widely spaced 3/6 sashes above. The right wing features a doorway sheltered by a Regency-style latticed metal porch with a swept roof, a tripartite sash window to the right, and two 3/6 sashes above, along with a moulded gutter cornice. Further to the right is a single-storey extension with two tripartite windows.

Attached to the front wall, enclosing each of the canted bay windows, are simple wooden railings, likely restored, which were used for tethering horses. The hotel forms a group with the stable and coach-house range at the rear, as well as with nearby properties Nos 68 & 70, 72-86, and 88-92 opposite.
