Description
The Scarisbrick Mausoleum, located to the south of the Church of St John, was built around 1900 by E.W. Johnson for the Scarisbrick family of Scarisbrick Hall. This mausoleum is designed in the Neo-Norman style and constructed from sandstone ashlar with slate roofs.
The building has a cruciform plan, featuring transepts and an apsidal east end, with the transepts and apse being lower than the nave. The exterior includes four round-headed windows on the north and south walls of the nave, two in the west wall of each transept, and two more in the apse, all set beneath coped gables. Each transept has circular windows in the end wall.
The west end features a round-headed arched doorway that is moulded in two orders, adorned with chevron mouldings and scalloped capitals. It has double doors that are protected by wrought-iron gates with Art Nouveau motifs. The windows are similarly decorated, with some featuring billet mouldings. A highly ornate corbel table runs along the north and south walls of the nave and around the apse, with each corbel showcasing an individual carving, some abstract and others semi-naturalistic. The four gables are topped with carved apex crosses, and the roof includes two small louvred dormers.
The interior maintains the same style, featuring arches leading to the transepts and chancel, along with several wall niches that echo the exterior design.
