Description
The Church of St Peter is a church built between 1870 and 1871, with a porch tower added in 1886-87, and transepts and vestries added along with a rebuilt chancel in 1907. It was designed by TD Barry and Sons. The church is constructed of coursed sandstone rubble and features a slate roof with blue and purple bands, showcasing a Decorated style.
The layout includes a nave with north and south aisles, and the porch tower is positioned in front of the south aisle. There are north and south transepts, and the chancel is flanked by north and south vestries.
The exterior features a square three-stage tower with angle buttresses, a north-west vice, a pierced parapet adorned with corner gargoyles and crocketed pinnacles. The south doorway is 2-centred arched, with a cusped lancet window on the second stage and 2-centred arched 2-light belfry windows that have stone louvres. The low lean-to aisles are fitted with short 2-centred arched 2-light windows that include cusped lights and square quatrefoil tracery in the heads, along with hoodmoulds that have figured stops. The transepts are highlighted by tall 2-centred arched 3-light traceried windows. The nave features a clerestory with pointed quatrefoils and a large 2-centred arched 4-light west window with elaborate tracery, while the chancel has a similar 5-light window.
Inside, there are 6-bay arcades with double-chamfered 2-centred arches supported by polished columns with carved capitals. The interior also boasts a finely carved reredos and organ case.
