Description
The Church of St Joseph is a Roman Catholic church built between 1865 and 1867, designed by Edward Welby Pugin. It features red brick in English garden wall bond with blue brick bands and sandstone dressings, topped with a steeply-pitched slate roof that includes a west bellcote. The architectural style is early English.
The church has a plan that includes a nave with a chancel, a south aisle, and a west narthex. The six-bay nave is supported by buttresses, with a narrow lancet window in each bay. The west gable has buttresses at ground level that create the sides of a lean-to narthex. This narthex features a two-centred arched west doorway, which is accessed by three steps and flanked by small rectangular windows. The doorway has an elaborately-moulded surround, a hoodmould, and a steeply-pitched gable that breaks the parapet. The windows are deeply-recessed with sloped sills and hoodmoulds. Above the narthex is a large wheel-window, and the bellcote is elaborately designed with two very steeply-pitched stages topped by a finial. The chancel includes a traceried circular east window, three lancets, and a chequered frieze.
The church forms a group with the associated presbytery located on the south side.
